You walk in expecting a church and find a thousand years of the country's history under one roof. The guide is worth using — half the floor you stand on is a grave

Poets' Corner stopped me for a good twenty minutes. Booked the first slot of the day and it was calm enough to actually read the stones

The vaulting in the Lady Chapel is worth the ticket on its own. Print the voucher before you travel, they do check it at the door
Things to Know Before Booking

What Your Ticket Includes

Entrance to Westminster Abbey and the multimedia guide, which is not available during Wednesday Lates. Transport, food and drink are not included.

Age Recommendations

The child ticket covers ages 0 to 17 and there is a family ticket for one adult and one child. The Abbey is a working church, so it is a quieter visit than a museum — worth knowing if you are bringing very young children.

Best Time to Attend

The first slots of the day are the calmest. Queues can build at the ticket office at peak times even with a pre-booked slot, so arrive a little early, and remember the galleries open half an hour after the Abbey itself.

Facilities

The Cellarium Café and the Abbey shop sit in the cloisters, and you can visit them without a ticket. A printed voucher is required at the entrance, and all visitors pass through a security search on the way in.

Accessibility

This is a medieval building: floors are uneven in places and there are steps between some of the chapels. If you have specific access requirements, check the Abbey's own access information before you travel.

Why You Should Visit
The Nave
Poets' Corner
The Lady Chapel
The Coronation Church
How Long Do You Need?

Allow around two hours. The multimedia guide follows a route through the nave, the quire, the royal tombs, the Lady Chapel and Poets' Corner, and most people stop far longer than they expect at the last two.

The Abbey closes an hour after last entry — 3.30pm Monday to Friday, 3pm on Saturday — so a late slot leaves little room. It is a working church and occasionally closes for services and special events, so check before you travel if your date is fixed.

How to get there

Venue: Westminster Abbey, 20 Dean's Yard, London SW1P 3PA

By Tube: Westminster (Jubilee, District and Circle lines) is about a five-minute walk. St James's Park (District and Circle lines) is about six minutes away.

On foot: The visitor entrance is the North Door, facing Parliament Square, a couple of minutes from Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

By Bus: Routes run along Victoria Street, Whitehall and Millbank, all within a few minutes' walk.

By Taxi: Any London driver knows the Abbey; ask for Parliament Square or Broad Sanctuary.

By Car: The Abbey is inside the Congestion Charge zone and on-street parking nearby is very limited, so public transport is strongly recommended.

Food and Drink
Cellarium Café & Terrace
The Abbey's own café, set in the 14th-century cellarium off the cloisters, with a terrace looking onto them. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, and no ticket needed. On site.
The Sanctuary House, Tothill Street
A traditional pub a street away, doing pies, fish and chips and cask ale. Approx. 5-minute walk (about 350 m).
The Red Lion, Parliament Street
The Westminster pub, all dark wood and division bells, a few doors from Downing Street. Approx. 5-minute walk (about 320 m).
St James's Café, Horse Guards Road
Park café with outdoor tables by the lake — the easiest place nearby to sit outside. Approx. 8-minute walk (about 600 m).
